Nearby Things to Do Worth the Drive From Carbondale CO
Carbondale sits at the entrance of the Crystal River Valley, which puts it closer than most to some of the lesser known spots in the Colorado Roaring Fork Valley area. The towns, ranches, and landmarks up Highway 133 don’t show up on the typical Aspen or Glenwood Springs itinerary, but they’re within 30–45 minutes of Carbondale and worth the detour. Redstone, Marble, Avalanche Ranch, and the Crystal Mill are the standouts as they are a mix of hot springs, working ghost town infrastructure, and backcountry scenery that most Roaring Fork Valley visitors never get to see.
Redstone, Colorado
Redstone sits 12 miles south of Carbondale along Highway 133 with a population under 150 people, a handful of galleries and shops, and direct access to the Crystal River. The town was originally built in 1898 as a model company town for coal and steel industrialist John Osgood, & his 42-room Redstone Castle still stands and offers tours. The surrounding area has moderate hiking trails, horseback riding into the White River National Forest, and Hayes Creek Falls just off CO-133.
Marble, Colorado
Marble is about 30 miles from Carbondale and is the source of the stone used in the Lincoln Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Marble Mill Site Park is a walkable outdoor area where quarried marble blocks still scatter the landscape, half-reclaimed by nature. Activities in the area include fly fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, four-wheeling, wildlife watching, and fall color tours. It’s also the launching point for reaching the Crystal Mill via the rough road up County Road 3.
Avalanche Ranch
Avalanche Ranch sits on Highway 133 in the Crystal River Valley and runs three geothermal hot springs pools with views of the Elk Range and Mount Sopris. The water is chemical-free, with the two upper pools running between 103 and 105°F. Day visitors can reserve a spot from 9am to 5pm, while overnight guests have around-the-clock access through 13 log cabins, sheep wagons, and a rental house. The pools are closed Wednesdays for cleaning.
Crystal Mill
The Crystal Mill is a wooden powerhouse built in 1892, sitting on a rock outcrop above the Crystal River near Marble, and is one of the most photographed spots in Colorado. The mill harnessed the Crystal River to power drills in the Sheep Mountain silver mines until operations closed in 1917. The road in is a rough, one-lane, 4WD route accessible only in summer and fall, though the mill can also be reached on foot, mountain bike, or jeep.
