The J Bar (Hotel Jerome)
The J Bar (Hotel Jerome) Description
The J Bar pours craft cocktails, classic American fare, and more than a century of Aspen history inside the Hotel Jerome, right along Main Street in the middle of downtown. The J Bar has stayed a working saloon since the building first opened in 1889, and that continuity, rather than a polished remodel, is what still sets it apart from most bars in town.
The J Bar opened as the Jerome Bar the same year Jerome B. Wheeler built the hotel around it, and miners flush with silver money made it one of Aspen’s busiest watering holes almost immediately. When Prohibition hit, the bar didn’t close, it disguised itself as a soda fountain, and bartenders started slipping bourbon into vanilla milkshakes to keep serving regulars under the counter. That drink, the Aspen Crud, is still on the menu today and remains one of the few direct links back to that era. Decades later, in 1970, journalist Hunter S. Thompson turned the bar into his unofficial campaign headquarters while running for Pitkin County sheriff, holding court at the counter and watching the news on the bar’s TV between rounds. The original back bar has survived all of it, its carved woodwork still anchoring the room alongside leather seating, old photographs, and windows that open onto the street.
Today the kitchen leans into elevated tavern cooking, with a burger regularly cited as one of the best in Aspen, along with local trout, oysters, and vegetarian and gluten-free options for guests who need them. The J Bar runs from late morning into the early hours of the next day, covering lunch, après-ski, dinner, and late night drinks under one roof, with outdoor seating and takeout available on top of regular table service. Craft beer and vintage-leaning cocktails round out the bar program, and staff also handle private event bookings for groups who want to use the space after hours. Few bars in the valley can claim this kind of unbroken history, and The J Bar wears it without dressing the room up into something it isn’t.
