Aspen Thrift Store Description

Aspen Thrift Store has been a fixture of the Aspen community since 1949, originally established to support the town’s early citizens hospital helping fund nurse salaries and later contributing to the Red Brick School, where it played a role in launching the first kindergarten and hot lunch program in the building now known as the Red Brick Center for the Arts. Over the decades, Aspen Thrift Store expanded its support to include the Aspen Ski Club and a broader network of local nonprofits, with all sales revenue directed back into the Roaring Fork Valley community.

The store is located between the fire station and Peaches Cafe on East Hopkins Avenue, a spot it has occupied since 1983, having previously moved through several downtown Aspen locations including the old assay office across the street, a lean-to attached to the Armory, and the Wheeler Opera House. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 3pm, with extended evening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30pm to 7pm, the shop is run entirely by volunteers who commit to two days a month.

The inventory includes men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, vintage and designer pieces, outerwear, boots, sneakers, handbags, jewelry, watches, and accessories — all donated by community members and priced well below retail. The volunteer-run model keeps overhead low and ensures that purchases translate directly into charitable impact.

For shoppers, it offers an accessible way to find affordable or unique clothing in one of Colorado’s more expensive towns. For volunteers, the store provides a regular connection to community, with each shift described as a mix of problem-solving, new experiences, and lasting friendships.
