Carbondale Clay Center
Carbondale Clay Center Description
Carbondale Clay Center has anchored the creative life of downtown Carbondale since 1997, operating as a nonprofit ceramic arts studio, gallery, and education hub on Main Street in the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley. What sets it apart from most community art spaces is the depth and accessibility of its programming alongside a rare 24-hour studio access membership model that allows working artists and serious students to maintain an uninterrupted creative practice on their own schedule.
The center offers wheel throwing, hand building, and glazing instruction across classes structured for adults, children, and families, with skill levels ranging from complete beginners to experienced ceramicists refining their technique. Summer camps bring younger students into the studio, and outreach partnerships with local organizations extend ceramic arts programming beyond the Main Street location into the broader community. A long-term artist residency program supports ceramicists developing a sustained body of work, giving residents dedicated studio time and connection to the valley’s arts network. The gallery and retail spaces run concurrently, exhibiting local and regional ceramic artists while offering handmade functional and decorative pottery for sale, including work produced within the residency program.
Carbondale Clay Center is currently in an expansion phase that will substantially change the physical footprint of the campus. The new $10 million facility has been designed by a ceramic artist and incorporates a gabion wall filled with fired ceramics, transforming the building’s exterior into a large-scale permanent artwork and signaling the center’s commitment to ceramics as both medium and architecture.
Funding comes through earned revenue, individual donors, foundations, and government grants, reflecting the center’s standing as a community institution supported by the Roaring Fork Valley and the national ceramics field alike. Special events including First Friday openings, raku workshops, and seasonal community gatherings keep Carbondale Clay Center embedded in local cultural life year-round. For anyone in Carbondale or the surrounding valley looking for serious ceramic instruction, studio access, or locally made pottery, this is the primary resource the community has sustained and grown for nearly three decades.
