Galerie Maximillian

Galerie Maximillian has been a fixture in downtown Aspen since 1997, making it one of the longest-running fine art galleries in the area. Located at 602 East Cooper Avenue between Hunter and Spring Streets, the gallery specializes in museum-quality works on paper and maintains a collection of over 1,000 pieces spanning 19th and 20th-century masters alongside contemporary artists.

The collection includes works by Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miró, and Renoir, as well as contemporary names like Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Basquiat, and Warhol. Unlike most Aspen galleries that operate on consignment, Galerie Maximillian owns the majority of its inventory — owner Albert Sanford personally selects each piece, approaching acquisitions the same way a private collector would. The gallery holds membership in the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA).

Exhibitions rotate frequently, with solo and group shows such as “Color + Abstraction” and “New British Editions” cycling through regularly. The gallery has a particular reputation in Aspen for its emphasis on contemporary British artists, a focus that sets it apart from other fine art spaces in the region. Staff provide art consultation services for both new and experienced collectors, and professional installation is available for local clients. Digital catalogs and online viewing rooms accommodate remote collectors as well.

Galerie Maximillian is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during peak seasons. Hours may vary in the off-season, so calling ahead is recommended at 970-925-6100. Appointments are also available outside regular hours.
