Kemo Sabe is a western wear store established in 1990 by Tom and Nancy Yoder, beginning as a 400-square-foot space in Snowmass Village before relocating to its flagship location on South Galena Street in downtown Aspen, Colorado. In 2020, ownership transferred to Wendy and Bobby Kunkle along with Andrew Wilson, who continue the store’s legacy of authentic western style and customer service. The store has expanded from its humble origins into a western retail operation with seven locations across Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Texas, and Montana.

The Aspen location serves as Kemo Sabe’s flagship store, offering clothing, boots, hats, and accessories for men, women, and kids throughout the year. The store specializes in high-end cowboy boots, felt and straw hats, leather belts, and custom western shirts, alongside scarves, denim, knives, and handcrafted leather goods. Many items are designed in-house or created in partnership with specialty artisans, with emphasis on quality craftsmanship and western aesthetics. Limited-edition and one-of-a-kind pieces are regularly available, with inventory reflecting seasonal shifts in apparel and accessory needs.

Kemo Sabe operates under the mantra “Make Everyone Feel Important,” a guiding principle maintained since 1990. The women-led team, driven by Wendy Kunkle, prioritizes exceptional customer service and genuine connections with shoppers. Sales Wranglers provide personal and custom shopping experiences, including personalized hat shaping, boot fitting, and custom engraving services to ensure proper fit and individual style. The store creates head-turning details while paying homage to western roots and striving for timeless style. In 2015, Kemo Sabe opened its first hat ranch facility in Basalt, Colorado, producing the Kemo Sabe Grit hat line. The hat making operation relocated to Gainesville, Texas in 2019, where it continues today under the management of part-owner Andrew Wilson. The Kemo Sabe Grit Hat Ranch follows a century-old hat making process to produce beaver and rabbit felt hats by hand.
