Aspen Dancing Fountain (Mill Street Fountain)
Aspen Dancing Fountain (Mill Street Fountain) Description
The Aspen Dancing Fountain (Mill Street Fountain) on the Hyman Avenue Mall is one of the town’s most recognized landmarks, notable for being the world’s first computerized fountain when it debuted on Memorial Day weekend in 1980. The project grew out of a collaboration between electronics engineer Nicholas DeWolf and sculptor Travis Fulton, who began developing the concept together in May 1978. DeWolf designed the computerized controls while Fulton handled the hydraulic engineering, with the City of Aspen and DeWolf splitting material costs and both creators contributing their labor to bring it to life.
The location itself was a deliberate part of the design. DeWolf and Fulton identified a storm drain at Mill Street in front of the Wheeler Opera House as the ideal site, a spot where water jets could rise directly from the pavement and then drain away completely, leaving no standing pool or unused basin between performances. DeWolf described his hope at the time that the fountain would become a standard meeting place in Aspen, somewhere people would naturally drift toward to spend a little time.
That vision has largely come true. The Aspen Dancing Fountain (Mill Street Fountain) has operated as a free, publicly accessible summer fixture for more than four decades, drawing locals and visitors to the mall for its synchronized water displays. It functions as a playground for children during the day and a gathering point for community events and celebrations throughout the summer season. The fountain celebrated its 30th year of continuous operation on July 31st, 2010, and remains one of the few original features of downtown Aspen that has carried through largely unchanged across generations of development around it.
