Aspen Skate Park (Rio Grande Skate Park) Description

Aspen Skate Park, also known as Rio Grande Skate Park, is a seventeen-thousand-square-foot outdoor concrete facility completed by Team Pain in November 2000. The park received a Merit Award for Design from the Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2002 and continues to receive recognition in the skate park industry. Located within Rio Grande Park, Aspen’s largest park within city limits, the skate park is situated just north of the downtown core at Mill Street and Rio Grande Place and serves as part of a vibrant hub for recreation and community events.

The super smooth skate park features a combination flow and mini bowl varying from four to six feet in depth with extensions, a hip and jump box, a three-level pool that is nine feet at its deepest end with plenty of hip action, and a three-and-a-half-foot deep bowl designed for beginners. Team Pain worked with the city’s landscape architect to creatively tie the skate park within its landscape using colored concrete techniques and introduced large natural boulders for retention walls and seating areas. The City of Aspen effectively used the design-build process to create an environmentally friendly skate park that balances challenge and accessibility for skaters from beginners to experts.

The park promotes a free and open environment with no fences, no pads, and no on-site staff, encouraging self-guided use while maintaining safety through thoughtful design. Rio Grande Park also features a professional-size rugby field, basketball courts, Theatre Aspen, the John Denver Sanctuary, and Aspen’s Recycle Center. Visitors will find picnic tables, benches, water fountains, a children’s play beach, restrooms, trail access, and art features throughout the park. Aspen Skate Park serves as a key recreational spot for the local community and visitors, supporting families, sports enthusiasts, and those seeking outdoor attractions while contributing to Aspen’s active lifestyle culture.
