Buttermilk Ski Resort Description

Buttermilk Ski Resort is one of Aspen’s four ski mountains and is widely known for its approachable terrain, family-friendly atmosphere, and long-standing role in freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Located just outside downtown Aspen, Buttermilk serves a wide range of visitors, from first-time skiers to professional athletes, and is especially recognized for balancing beginner terrain with world-class terrain parks.

The mountain is divided into three main areas: Tiehack, Main Buttermilk, and West Buttermilk. West Buttermilk is considered one of the best beginner skiing areas in Colorado, with gentle slopes, wide groomed runs, and easy access to lessons and learning zones. This area is home to The Hideout, a dedicated children’s learning space designed to introduce kids to skiing and snowboarding in a controlled, welcoming environment. Main Buttermilk offers longer groomed runs, access to base amenities, and on-mountain dining, while Tiehack is popular with uphill skiers, snowshoers, and those looking for a quieter side of the mountain. Buttermilk is internationally known as the home of X Games Aspen, which takes place annually and transforms the mountain into a global stage for elite freestyle athletes. Outside of X Games, the terrain parks remain a major draw throughout the season, featuring slopestyle courses, jumps, rails, and a halfpipe that appeal to freestyle skiers and riders of varying abilities. Groomed runs, tree skiing areas, and designated uphill routes add to the variety of ways guests can experience the mountain.

In addition to skiing and riding, Buttermilk hosts seasonal events, including uphilling races, full moon dinners, and community-focused activities. On-mountain dining options include the Cliffhouse, located at the top of the mountain with views of Pyramid Peak, and the Buttermilk Mountain Lodge at the base area. The resort has a long history in Aspen, opening in 1958 with a single T-bar lift and later becoming one of the first areas to welcome snowboarding on a trial basis. Buttermilk Ski Resort is part of Aspen Snowmass and offers easy access to rentals, lessons, and services, making it a practical choice for families, beginners, and freestyle enthusiasts alike.
