The Dinkel Mercantile Description

The Dinkel Mercantile is a historical museum and cultural center in Carbondale, Colorado, managed by the Carbondale Historical Society. The museum facility preserves and showcases the rich history of Carbondale and the surrounding Roaring Fork Valley region through exhibits, artifacts, and educational programs, serving families, history enthusiasts, and visitors interested in the area’s heritage, mining history, and early settlement patterns.

The Pioneer Log Cabin was built in 1887 by the first homesteaders in the Crystal Valley: Myron Thompson and Samuel Bowles, along with Bowles’ nephew Oscar Holland. The cabin’s original location was approximately one mile west on the Crystal River. The interior has recently been remodeled in the style of an old-time mercantile, reflecting the original Dinkel Mercantile built and operated by William Dinkel, known as “The Daddy of Carbondale” for starting the first stage stop, store, and Bank of Carbondale, where he served as president. The original Mercantile was located in the Dinkel Building, which still stands at the corner of 4th and Main Street.

The Carbondale Historical Society, chartered in 1984 as the Mt. Sopris Historical Society by concerned citizens including descendants of original homesteading families, changed its name to better reflect its main focus and improve online accessibility. The organization was established out of an urgent need to preserve the historical assets and heritage of the Crystal River Valley. CHS owns and operates the Historic Log Cabin and the Old Jailhouse, and serves as steward of the Thompson House Museum. The society owns and cares for the contents of the Thompson House Museum along with other artifacts and archives donated by the community. CHS maintains a research library comprised of local history books, newspaper articles, memoirs, photos, and recorded narratives.

The museum hosts regular events, educational programs, and rotating exhibits that highlight different aspects of local history throughout the year. The Carbondale Historical Society organizes community events and presentations engaging residents and visitors in exploring the area’s past. The facility welcomes school groups, families, and individuals seeking to understand the cultural development of this part of Colorado’s Western Slope, including stories of early settlers, mining operations, and agricultural development.
