Downtown Basalt

Historic Downtown Basalt sits at the scenic confluence of two Gold Medal rivers, the Fryingpan River and the Roaring Fork River, forming the cultural and commercial heart of the community. Often referred to as “Old Town,” downtown Basalt blends historic character with modern vitality, offering a walkable district filled with locally owned shops, restaurants, galleries, and civic spaces. The area is defined by its preserved Victorian-era architecture, with many building facades dating back to the 1890s, reflecting Basalt’s origins as a railroad hub in the midvalley corridor.

The two primary corridors of historic downtown are Midland Avenue and Two Rivers Road. Midland Avenue serves as the central spine of the district and is widely recognized as the heart of downtown activity. Along this stretch, visitors will find art galleries, clothing boutiques, home goods stores, dining options, and professional services, all contributing to a vibrant local economy. Two Rivers Road provides additional access to businesses and connects downtown directly to nearby recreational amenities and riverfront spaces. Lions Park anchors the downtown area and is home to Basalt Town Hall and the Basalt Chamber of Commerce, famously housed in a red caboose, with convenient river access just steps away.

Downtown Basalt also functions as a cultural and recreational hub. The area includes multiple art galleries, an art center, and a whitewater park that attracts kayakers and spectators alike. A short walk from the downtown core leads to the Basalt Regional Library, the post office, and local schools, reinforcing downtown’s role as a central gathering place for daily life. The Basalt/Old Snowmass and Emma bike trails connect both ends of downtown to the Rio Grande Trail, making the area easily accessible for cyclists and pedestrians traveling through the Roaring Fork Valley.

In recent years, downtown has welcome the Midland Avenue Streetscape Project which enhances downtown Basalt. This voter-approved initiative focuses on improving essential infrastructure while preserving the historic character of the area. Planned and ongoing improvements include wider sidewalks, improved ADA accessibility, enhanced pedestrian flow, additional seating, public art installations, increased bicycle parking, natural landscaping elements, and traffic-calming design features. The project is designed to strengthen economic development, support local businesses, and create a more inviting and resilient downtown environment.
