Fairy Caves (Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park) Description

The Historic Fairy Caves at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is a living limestone cave system perched atop Iron Mountain in Glenwood Springs, reached by gondola and offering one of the more historically layered underground experiences in Colorado. The 40-minute guided walking tour covers a quarter mile of narrow, winding passages through formations shaped by millennia of water and heat, including crystalline reflection pools, stalactites, stalagmites, soda straw formations, and the vividly colored Register Room, where interaction with ancient hot springs waters has saturated the cave walls with rich mineral hues.

The tour exits briefly through the hand-blasted Darrow Tunnel to reach Exclamation Point, a cliffside viewing balcony 1,300 feet above the canyon floor with direct sightlines down into the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers.

Named highlights along the route include the Cloud Room with its subaqueous calcite ceiling, the Pendant Room carved by air and water, the Eternal Towers underground canyon, the Head Office where tree roots have penetrated deep into the cave, and the Reflection Room where still pools mirror the formations above.

The tour is designed for most fitness levels, with packed gravel floors, one gradual slope, and 18 steps split across two sets. Passageways narrow in a few brief sections, and ceiling height dips to 5.5 feet in one well-lit area. The current tour route took two years to prepare, with nearly 1,000 tons of debris removed by hand before the passages were accessible to general visitors. The tour is not wheelchair accessible, and flip-flops are not recommended.
