Holden Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum Description

Holden Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum is a seasonal museum located at 40180 Highway 82 in Aspen on the Marolt Open Space bike path by the pedestrian bridge at Seventh Street. Operated by the Aspen Historical Society, the museum sits on the site of the largest industrial complex in Pitkin County history, the Holden Lixiviation Works. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and preserves the area’s industrial and agricultural heritage through restored buildings, original equipment, and interpretive exhibits. Museum grounds are accessible year-round with docents on site from June through September, and à la carte bookings are available dependent on availability during fall, winter, and spring. Admission is free, generously underwritten by Carl’s Pharmacy and Miners’ Building Hardware. Limited parking is available, and dogs are welcome on the grounds but must be leashed during operating hours.

The museum features the former Sampling building turned museum, the original salt shed, and the relocated and restored historic McMurchy/Zupancis cabin and outbuildings that tell the story of Aspen’s Victorian era and the immigrants who shaped the community’s agrarian heritage. The historic barn built in 1891 houses mining and farming artifacts and provides demonstrations of operational mining and ranching machinery including 1880s steam engines. Life-size replicas of farm animals are displayed throughout the property, with a demonstration milking cow in the McMurchy/Zupancis barn. Docents, videos, and interpretive signage provide information about the site’s history, with Spanish-language translations available in print across the property.

Holden Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum serves as both an educational resource and event venue. The outdoor grounds accommodate up to 150 people for private events set against historic mining buildings and landscapes, with 4,000 square feet of event space available in the historic barn. Docent-led tours are available during operating hours, and visitors can explore the museum property independently when docents are not present. The museum highlights Aspen’s evolution from a silver mining town to a center for agriculture and ranching through exhibits covering mining technology, railways, and ranching traditions.
