Independence Pass Description

Independence Pass is a high-mountain corridor along Colorado State Highway 82 that crosses the Continental Divide between Leadville and Aspen at an elevation of 12,095 feet. Part of the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway, the pass spans approximately thirty-two miles and takes forty-five minutes to an hour and a half to drive with stops along the way. The road is open seasonally, typically from late May through late October depending on weather conditions. Independence Pass winds through groves of aspen and above alpine valleys alongside the Roaring Fork River, with numerous overlooks and scenic viewpoints accessible from pullouts along the highway.

The road is steep, narrow, and twisty with only a few guardrails, requiring drivers to follow speed limits and exercise caution. Commercial and recreational vehicles thirty-five feet or longer are prohibited on Independence Pass, with alternative routes available on I-70. Road biking is popular during late spring, summer, and early fall, with cyclists riding the climb to the Continental Divide summit. In late spring after snow melts but before the road opens to vehicles, bikers can enjoy a peaceful ride without car traffic. The annual Ride for the Pass event takes place just before the road opens to cars, featuring a ten-mile ride beginning near the winter closure gate and finishing at Independence Ghost Town. When the road is open to vehicles, typically mid to late May through late October, cyclists must stay alert to car traffic, which is especially heavy on summer weekends.

Camping is available at Difficult Campground, Weller Campground, Lincoln Gulch, and Lost Man Campground, with reservations often required. Several hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult are accessible directly from the pass. Independence Pass corridor passes through three major life zones including montane, subalpine, and alpine environments, supporting diverse flora and fauna from vibrant greenery alongside the Roaring Fork River to alpine windblown tundra at the summit. The Independence Pass Foundation works to restore and protect the ecological, historical, and aesthetic integrity of the corridor while encouraging safety, stewardship, and appreciation through volunteer opportunities and educational programs.
