Kidz Hike Description

Kidz Hike is Aspen’s only hiking class designed exclusively for children ages 3 to 7, creating lifelong hikers through outdoor education and nature exploration. The program teaches children the fundamentals of hiking by instructing them on how to safely interact with the outdoors, facilitating an understanding of their natural surroundings, introducing basic survival knowledge and techniques, demonstrating trail etiquette, and fostering respect and appreciation for the forces of nature. Kidz Hike provides a safe and supportive environment where young children can learn hiking basics while enjoying age-appropriate trails.

The purpose of Kidz Hike is to teach children how to safely and responsibly hike through age-appropriate safety instruction, wilderness survival techniques, and plant and animal identification. At the end of the class, children have a foundation to start a lifelong love of hiking and appreciation for nature. Caregivers drop off children at either Ajax Park or Heron Park, with the drop-off location determined the week before each class. The total hiking distance is approximately one mile with no specific destination, as the goal is to have fun, appreciate nature, and learn how to become a lifelong hiker. The hike lasts about an hour and a half, includes snack time, and returns to the pick-up location.

Kidz Hike continues in light rain but is canceled in severe weather or lightning. If unexpected severe weather occurs during the hike, children are moved to the nearest indoor space for caregiver pick-up. The program operates with experienced instructors who provide flexible scheduling to accommodate busy families. Kidz Hike plays an important role in promoting outdoor fitness and family activities in the Roaring Fork Valley by encouraging children to connect with nature early and develop healthy, active lifestyles through educational and enjoyable outdoor experiences.
