Powers Art Center
Powers Art Center Description
Powers Art Center is a museum and cultural study center in Carbondale, Colorado, dedicated to preserving and sharing the artistic legacy of John G. Powers and showcasing iconic 20th-century modern and contemporary art. The cultural institution houses a significant collection of Pop Art and post-war works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and others, serving families, art enthusiasts, and students throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Following John Powers’ passing in 1999, Kimiko Powers transformed the foundation to support building the Powers Art Center, stewarding the art collection, creating a program of study around Jasper Johns, and conserving their former ranch outside Carbondale.
Admission to the Powers Art Center is always free. Visitors can discover modern and contemporary art, engage in hands-on art-making, browse the extensive library, or sit in quiet reflection. The center is open Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 5pm and Saturday from 11am to 3pm. The museum welcomes groups for scheduled tours, accommodating organizations, art clubs, colleges, and friend groups from six to 30 people. Private viewings outside museum hours can be arranged to accommodate different schedules, needs, and abilities.
The center’s mission is to make art accessible to students of all ages through guided school tours customized to specific age groups, ensuring meaningful and enjoyable engagement with the art. The facility offers family-friendly programming alongside scholarly resources for serious art study and research, serving as both a memorial to John G. Powers and an active cultural institution. Free drop-in tours are hosted periodically and listed on the events calendar. Located on Highway 82 near Carbondale, Powers Art Center provides accessible cultural programming for residents and visitors throughout the Roaring Fork Valley region, contributing to the arts infrastructure available in this part of Colorado.
