Snowmass Balloon Festival Description

Snowmass Balloon Festival returns to Snowmass Town Park September 25 through 27, 2026, marking the event’s 51st year as one of the highest-altitude hot air balloon gatherings in the country. More than 30 balloons inflate and launch from the field at 2000 Brush Creek Road, set against the Elk Range and the valley’s early autumn color. The festival is free to attend, and its elevation, well above 8,000 feet, gives pilots a narrower window of calm morning air than lower-altitude festivals typically get, which shapes much of how the weekend unfolds.

The Snowmass Balloon Festival opens Friday evening with the Night Glow from 6 to 9 p.m., when tethered balloons are lit from within on the field, accompanied by music and free glow-in-the-dark giveaways for kids. It’s the best chance to walk up to a balloon and talk with a pilot before flight. Friday morning also carries one of the event’s longest-running traditions, a distance competition in which pilots cannot steer horizontally and instead work altitude alone to catch the cold air currents that follow the Roaring Fork River downvalley, sometimes reaching as far as Carbondale. Saturday and Sunday mornings, from roughly 7 to 9 a.m., bring the mass ascensions that most visitors associate with the Snowmass Balloon Festival, with balloons lifting off together over Snowmass Village in the hour or two of stable air before winds pick up.

Viewing is centered on the softball field near the Snowmass Club, open to the public for close-up access to inflation and launch. There’s no seating provided, so visitors bring their own chairs or blankets and set up along the perimeter; dogs aren’t permitted on site. Light breakfast and coffee are typically available from vendors on the field. September mornings at this elevation run cold, so warm layers and closed-toe shoes are worth planning for.

Free parking is available at Town Park Station, the Rodeo Lot, and the Brush Creek Park and Ride, all served by continuous free shuttle, with limited free parking also at the Base Village Parking Garage; the Snowmass Village Shuttle and RFTA run free throughout the village. Road shoulder parking, including along Brush Creek and Owl Creek Roads, is prohibited due to ongoing drought restrictions, so visitors should plan to walk, shuttle, or bike in.
